My Daddy

Dad has never had many hobbies which usually makes gift buying rather difficult. However, dad LOVES sports. He enjoys watching them in person and on television. When he was younger, he loved to pick up a game of horse on the basketball court or play 18 holes on a golf course every once in awhile. So, we were puzzled when my dad sold his golf clubs when my brother and I were in elementary school. Later, we found out dad had sold the clubs so our family could afford a vacation that summer.

I don't remember with whom I was going on date. I don't remember what I was wearing. I don't even remember where I was going. But, I do remember my daddy calling from his bedroom for me to come talk with him. When I entered, my dad was lying on his bed and asked me to come beside him. He held me. He told me I as beautiful. He told me he loved me. When I left for that date, I wasn't looking for love. I knew that my daddy loved me and would do anything in the world for me.

A year ago, I sat down with dad at an ice cream place. He easily picked up a conversation with a young woman and her son. Before long, he had engaged in a spiritual conversation and was asking her where she would spend eternity. I sat there watching and listening and learning how to tell others about Jesus.

There are so many stories I could share about dad's love, his sacrifices, and his heart for Jesus. I could tell you how he shares God's goodness to his grandchildren every opportunity he gets. I could tell you how he is quick to forgive. I could tell you how he read his entire Bible through in 40 days last year. But this Father's Day, I just want to thank my dad for being my dad. Thanks for teaching me to ride my bike without training wheels. Thanks for assuring me that I was beautiful after each bad hairdo. Thanks for helping me buy my first car. Thanks for driving the Penske truck to Pennsylvania when I leased my first apartment. Thanks for gushing over my newborn babies. Thanks for doing all those "dad things" plus so much more. I am proud, privileged, and blessed to call you my daddy.
