I fear the church has lost its admiration for heroes. The Bible is packed full of stories of men, women, and children who stood up for what was right, despite the consequences. David, Esther, Stephen, Joash, and countless others are remembered as heroes. I especially love the accounts of David's mighty men in 2 Samuel 23. These men believed God and were not afraid of lions, giants, and 800 to 1 odds. Often, when all others fled in fear, they stood knowing that one with God is a majority.

The American church today has stripped these stories of their power and application for today. They have been turned into anecdotal stories relating to interpersonal conflicts, financial difficulties, and losing surplus weight. Some have even distanced themselves from the Old Testament and described it as merely symbolic. They also imply that God is no longer in the business of miracles. In Luke 18:8, Jesus asks if He will He find faith on the earth when He returns. Most likely not in our churches. We need those who will believe God and act in faith, heroism, and God's power. Furthermore, we need to continue to teach our children these important truths.

The Torchlighters series are stories of ordinary Christians that accomplished amazing things by believing in God. They also present the cost of such actions. I believe these are great videos, put out by the Voice of the Martyrs, that help to teach our kids these important truths and realities. God can use them to reach the world if they posses an unshakeable faith. Sadly, I believe difficult days lie ahead. We need to put good media in front of our children, media which will build their spiritual muscles and their ability to stand for what is right. The stories of Adonirum Judson, Eric Liddell, Corrie TenBoom, Richard Wurmbrand, and more need to be told today. They are great stories, produced with quality, and captivating to kids and adults of all ages. Who is your favorite Christian hero?
