I was standing in line at the Dollar Tree at 3:30 PM on Halloween evening. Yes, I know, it wasn't a bright idea because everyone and their neighbor was in the store. The wait to check out was about 30 minutes. There was a middle-aged lady and her teenage daughter directly behind me. Now, before you judge me for eavesdropping, you must understand that they were talking so loud that everyone in the line could hear their conversation.
Daughter: I'm going to be late for work. I have to be there by 4. What do I do?
Mother: Call your work and tell them the dog got out. You'll just be about 10 minutes late.
Daughter: Ok
(The daughter leaves, makes the call, and returns to her mom.)
Daughter: Good thing Jared answered the phone. I told him the dog got out and he was fine with it.
I stood there shocked. There was no embarrassment that the duo had concocted a bold face lie. In fact, the daughter spoke so loud that it was like her sin was a feather in her cap.
"Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?
No, they were not at all ashamed;
they did not know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among the fallen;
when I punish them, they shall be overthrown,
says the Lord."
Jeremiah 8:12
You see, there was no blush, no remorse, no embarrassment. There was just a big, fat lie.
I am amazed by how many professing believers make the choice to move in with their boyfriend/girlfriend, get pregnant, and then get married, Their sin of fornication is plastered all over social media. There's no blush, no remorse, no embarrassment,
I have literally heard pastors stand up in the pulpit and tell their congregations about a movie, which contains foul language, violence, or sex, they watched. The movie should have never been discussed, but yet they are so desperate for an illustration that they have to go to the Hollywood swamp to find an example. There's no blush, no remorse, no embarrassment.
We have lost our blush as a nation.
So, here we sit on the eve of a very important election. Everyone is blaming everyone else for the state of our country. But the root of the problem is SIN. And, no, it's not just someone else's sin. It's your sin. It's my sin. And the biggest problem in my eyes is that there is no embarrassment for it.
What's the cure?
Repentance.
"If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land."
2 Chronicles 7:14
Can our nation be healed? Absolutely. It starts with you and me.
